Abstract
ABSTRACT Hidayah, Rofingatul. Registered Number Students. 2816133301. 2016. The Effectiveness of Using Board Game toward Students’ Speaking Proficiency of The First Graders at MAN 2 Tulungagung.Thesis. English Education Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S, M.Pd. Key words: Effectiveness, Speaking, Board Game, Speaking Proficiency Speaking is an interactive process of constructing meaning that involves producing, receiving, processing information, and the presence of speaker and listener. The aim of speaking is to communicate ideas. Therefore, it is so essential for the teacher to pay great attention on the teaching of speaking. The teachers should provide various methods for speaking activities to develop basic interactive skills required for life. Those activities make the students more active in learning process and at the same time it makes their learning more meaningful and fun. The use of Board Game can be useful to facilitate students’ learning. Boar Game can give many advantages for students speaking ability. It can be applied in groups so the students can express their ideas in English with their friends in fun way. The formulation of the research problems is: Is there any significant difference on students’ achievement in speaking before and after being taught by using Board Game? The purpose of the study is to know whether there is any significant difference on students’ achievement in speaking before and after being taught by using Board Game. Research method: 1) The research design is pre-experimental design using quantitative approach, 2) The populations of this study are all first graders students of MAN 2 Tulungagung, 3) The sample is X -IIS3 class consisting of 40 students, 4) The research instruments are tests; pre-test and post-test of speaking, 5) The technique of data analysis is using T-test. T-test is used to compute students’ scores to determine whether Ha is accepted or rejected. The result shows that the totals of students’ score before being taught by using Board Game are (87.35). Meanwhile the students’ scores after being taught by using Board Game are (116.25). From the result of computation, it reveals that tcountis (14.986.). It is bigger than T-table 1.960 and it is significant at level 0.05. From the result of computation, Ha which states that there is any significance difference between students’ speaking score before and after being taught by using Board Game is accepted. Meanwhile, the null hypothesis (H0) stated there is no significance difference between students’ speaking score before and after being taught by using Board Game is rejected. The hypothesis testing above implies that Board Game is effective for teaching speaking. In other word, Board Game can be used as an alternative teaching media to teach speaking of the first grader for SMA level.
