Abstract
This article presents the tiban tradition as a representation of Javanese Islam, offering an alternative perspective. Rather than simplifying tiban as a practice of “syncretism,” this study employs Ernst Cassirer's symbolic philosophy to conceive of the tradition as a symbolic manifestation of the subject's perception of reality. Cassirer claims that humans are "animal Symbolicum," who consistently link meaning to symbols. Through fieldwork in one of the villages in Trenggalek, East Java, this article elaborates on the diversity and complexity of the “tiban” tradition. It also argues that viewing the “tiban” tradition solely as a representation of “Javanese Islam” should move beyond the boundaries of a “syncretic” and “normative” paradigm that tends to oversimplify the matter. This article presents a nuanced depiction of “tiban” by interpreting ritual symbols in a universal philosophical context. The study emphasizes that the "tiban" is not merely a rain-making ritual but also functions as a symbolic ceremony establishing a profound ontological connection between humans and spiritual principles. Nevertheless, this conclusion is not definitive and requires constructive criticism to mitigate potential academic bias.
