Abstract
Rahma, Risma Aprilia. Student ID Number. 126203211065. 2025. The Effectiveness of Using Chain Story Technique in Students’ Speaking Ability at MAN Kota Blitar. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Hj. Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Chain Story Technique, Speaking Ability. Speaking is the most complex skill in English, and it is essential for students to master it in order to express their ideas, thoughts, and feelings clearly in oral form. However, many students still face difficulties in speaking due to lack of confidence, lack of ideas, fear of making mistakes, and tend to participate passively in speaking activities. To address these issue, the use of engaging technique such as Chain Story in teaching speaking can be a potential solution. Chain Story is a technique in which each student in a group is required to contribute sentences to build a complete story. This method encourages them to actively participate in classroom speaking activities and helps them become more confident. The formulation of the problem in this research is: “Is there any significant difference on students’ speaking scores with and without being taught using Chain Story Technique on the tenth grade of MAN Kota Blitar?”. The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is a significant difference in students’ speaking scores with and without being taught using Chain Story Technique on the tenth grade of MAN Kota Blitar. The researcher used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research design. The population of this study was tenth grade students of MAN Kota Blitar which amounted to 357 students. The sample of this research involved X-E1 and X-E8 classes, each consisting of 31 students, where X-E8 class as the Experimental Group and X-E1 as the Control Group. The instrument used in this research was a speaking test. Data analysis used Independent Samples T-test with SPSS Statistics 29.0 programs. The results showed that the experimental group achieved a higher mean post-test score compared to the control group, with the mean score of 14.68 for the experimental group and 12.10 for the control group. Furthermore, the results of the Independent Samples T-test (Sig. 2-tailed) show a significance value of 0.001, which is lower than the standard significance level of 0.05 (0.001 < 0.05). Therefore, it can be said that the Null Hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the Alternative Hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be concluded that there was a significant difference in students’ speaking scores with and without being taught using Chain Story Technique in the tenth grade of MAN Kota Blitar. Thus, the use of Chain Story technique is considered effective and can be used as a alternative method for teaching speaking.
