Abstract

Sitta Safrinah. NIM 126203212151. 2025. The Effectiveness of Minimal Pair Teaching Strategy in Improving Pronunciation Accuracy a Quasi-Experimental Study at the Seventh-Grade of MtsN 10 Blitar. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University (UIN) Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor Emmi Naja, Ph.D. Keywords: Minimal Pair and Pronunciation The background of this study is based on problems found in English language learning at MTsN 10 Blitar, particularly among seventh-grade students who experience difficulties in pronunciation. This is caused by several factors, including the conventional teaching methods used by teachers, which make lessons less effective and inadequate. Therefore, new innovations are needed, such as learning using the Minimal Pair Strategy. The Minimal Pair Strategy is considered effective because it can help students distinguish similar sounds in English, improve phonetic sensitivity, and systematically improve pronunciation skills. Additionally, this method makes the learning environment more interactive and engaging, thereby increasing students' motivation and confidence in practicing English pronunciation. The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of the minimal pair teaching strategy in improving pronunciation among seventh-grade students at MTsN 10 Blitar. The research approach uses a quantitative approach with a quasi- experimental research design employing a two-group pre-test and post-test design. Data collection techniques in this study involve pre-tests and post-tests, whose results are analyzed using statistical tests. Instrument validity and reliability tests were conducted. Prerequisite tests included normality and homogeneity tests, while hypothesis testing used the T-test. The results of this study indicate that: 1) The average post-test score in the experimental class reached 90.79, an increase from the pre-test score of 47.25. Meanwhile, the average score of the control class only reached 82.43. 2) There was a significant difference in students' pronunciation skills before and after the implementation of the Minimal Pair Strategy, with a T-test significance value of < 0.0001. Thus, this method proved to be effective in improving the pronunciation skills of seventh-grade students at MTsN 10 Blitar.
