Abstract
Rahmawati, Mida. NIM 12203213196. 2025. The Effectiveness of Using Charades Word Games in Teaching English Vocabulary for Functional Text Mastery of Early 8th Grade at SMPN 2 Sumbergempol. Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulunagung. Advisor: Anindita Badianti, M.Pd. Keywords: effectiveness, vocabulary mastery, Charades word Game, functional text. Charades Word Game is a popular interactive learning method widely used in various educational contexts. This game allows students to guess words through physical gestures or facial expressions performed by their peers without using spoken language. In English language learning, Charades can help students recognize and understand vocabulary in a fun and engaging way. One of the essential skills in language acquisition is vocabulary mastery. The purpose of using the Charades Word Game is to provide students with an active, collaborative, and meaningful learning experience. The researcher believes that this game is engaging and suitable for classroom application due to its adaptability and ability to involve students directly in the learning process. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Charades Word Game in enhancing students’ motivation and vocabulary mastery in functional texts. It also explores the supporting and inhibiting factors during its implementation. This study employed an experimental design with a quantitative approach. The population consisted of early 8th-grade students at SMPN 2 Sumbergempol. The sample included class VIII E as the experimental group and class VIII B as the control group, each consisting of 25 students. The instruments used were pre-test and post-test vocabulary assessments. The researcher used a purposive sampling technique, selecting classes with similar academic abilities and learning characteristics to allow a more objective comparison. Data were analyzed using the Independent Sample T-Test with the help of SPSS version 26. Observation and reflections were also gethered to identify student motivation and influencing factors. The results of this study indicate that the use of the Charades Word Game is highly effective in teaching English, particularly in enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery in functional texts. This is evident from the difference in the average pre-test score of 47.47, which increased to 83.47 in the post-test. The statistical analysis yielded a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.000, which is lower than 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the use of the Charades Word Game is effective in improving students’ English vocabulary and can serve as a fun and meaningful alternative for language instruction at the junior high school level, especially in the context of narrative texts.
