Abstract
Aghits Akrimna Mudawamah. Student ID Number. 1880510230002. Expressive Speech Acts In The Movie Inside Out 2 By Kelsey Mann. Thesis. English Education Department. Magister Program. State Islamic University Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd and Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keywords: expressive speech acts, language, communication, social context, cultural values, emotion expression, Inside Out 2 Language is essential in social life as a tool for conveying messages, studied through linguistics, particularly pragmatics, which examines language in context. One key concept in pragmatics is speech acts. Searle developed five types, including expressive speech acts, which reflect the speaker’s emotions like thanking, criticizing, or apologizing. This study analyzes expressive speech acts in the movie Inside Out 2 by Kelsey Mann which has the problem formulation that is what are the types of expressive speech acts used by the characters, how are the expressive speech acts formally realized across social contexts as found in the movie, and how are the expressive speech acts used from a cultural perspective in the movie. And the purpose of this research is to identify the types of speech act expressions and to understand expressive speech acts formally realized across social contexts and used from a cultural perspective. This research uses a qualitative design with a content analysis model based on the approach developed by Cresswell. The data source is taken from the transcripts of conversations in the movie Inside Out 2 by watching, writing the transcripts, and classifying them using Searle’s and Blum-Kulka’s linguistic theories to interpret the data. The research used theoretical triangulation to validate the data. The findings show that there are nine types of expressive speech acts used by the characters, which include expressing thanking, apologizing, congratulating, blaming, praising, deploring, condoling, wishing, and complaining. Speech acts varied in terms of formality, with characters adjusting their language based on context-formal language was used in professional or respectful situations, while informal language reflected intimacy or emotional intensity. In addition, cultural values, especially from Western cultures, influence the characters’ communication styles, such as showing respect through titles and expressing emotions openly. This research offers insights into how verbal communication in the movie Inside Out 2 reflects social relationships and emotional dynamics, providing a cultural and linguistic perspective on character interactions in animated movies.
