Abstract

The thesis entitled "The Effectiveness of Using Phonics Instruction as Teaching Method in Improving Students' English Word Pronunciation at MTsN 2 Kota Blitar" was written by Egina Nadyanita Mayrinasari, NIM. 126203213210, English Language Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, with advisor Emmi Naja, Ph.D. Keywords: effectiveness, phonics instruction, pronunciation One of the most important components to teach students while studying English as a foreign language is pronunciation. Students who lack pronunciation accuracy often experience difficulties in being understood and understanding spoken English, which may lead to low confidence and reduced participation in class. Therefore, in this modern era, English teachers are encouraged to implement innovative and engaging methods such as, phonics instruction to improve learners’ pronunciation and make the learning process more interactive and effective. This research was conducted at MTsN 2 Kota Blitar. This study investigates the effectiveness of phonics instruction in enhancing the English pronunciation skills of seventh-grade students at MTsN 2 Kota Blitar. This research aims to measure the effectiveness of phonics instruction on students' English pronunciation. This research used quantitative research with a quasi-experimental design. The participants were divided into two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The population in this study was class VII which amounted to 380 students. The researcher used non-probability sampling to select the sample for this research. The teacher provided two classes (groups) as samples: an experimental class of 35 students and a control class of 35 students. Data collection techniques used pre-test and post-test. Then the data was analyzed using the independent sample T-test formula for hypothesis testing. The findings show that phonics instruction is effective in improving students' English pronunciation after using phonics instruction. From the data, it can be seen that the average post-test score in the experimental group is higher than the average post-test score in the control group. Then the results showed a Sig (2- tailed) value of 0.001 less than 0.05. Based on data analysis and hypotheses, the calculation results show that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. This shows that there is a significant improvement in students' English pronunciation. It can be concluded that phonics instruction can improve the English pronunciation of seventh-grade students at MTsN 2 Kota Blitar and can be recommended as a method for teaching pronunciation
