Abstract
Rodiah, Novilia (126203211057). The Correlation Between Students' Participation in the English Club and Their Speaking Performance at SMA Negeri 1 Boyolangu. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Speaking is considered one of the most challenging skills for EFL students as it requires fluency, confidence, and spontaneous language use. Many students still face difficulties in expressing their ideas orally due to limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and fear of making mistakes. English Club is expected to provide more opportunities for students to practice speaking in a communicative setting. The research question in this study is “Is there any significant correlation between students’ participation in the English Club and their speaking performance at SMA Negeri 1 Boyolangu?” This research used a quantitative correlational design. The sample consisted of 30 tenth and eleventh-grade students selected through cluster sampling based on three divisions: speech, storytelling, and debate. Students’ participation was measured using a 26-item questionnaire based on multidimensional engagement theory, while speaking performance was assessed through an oral test using Brown’s rubric. Since the data were not normally distributed, Spearman Rank Correlation was applied using SPSS version 27. The result showed that the correlation coefficient was 0.116 with a significance value of 0.542 (p > 0.05), indicating that the null hypothesis (H₀) was accepted and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) was rejected. It means there was no significant correlation between students’ participation in the English Club and their speaking performance. Although students showed relatively high engagement and adequate speaking performance, participation was not a determining factor in improving speaking ability without structured practice and appropriate pedagogical support.
