Keywords: academic achievement, intercultural communication, critical reading Intercultural communication has reshaped what it means to communicate effectively in a foreign language. The earlier view of emulating native speakers is no longer deemed ideal; instead, learners are now encouraged to embrace their own cultural identities. However, the literature remains complex, overly so given the many conceptual models available, making practical adoption in classroom settings a challenge. Furthermore, despite the similar cognitive processes observed in both intercultural communication and critical thinking, few studies have explored this connection. The few that have done so rely mainly on theoretical, descriptive quantitative, or experimental designs, with no correlational research to date. This study thus examined the correlation between these constructs within their naturalistic settings, specifically through students’ academic achievement in two related courses: Intercultural Communication and Critical Reading Comprehension, at Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. This study employed a quantitative correlational research design using secondary data obtained from institutional academic records. The population consisted of all sixth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung from the 2023 cohort during the 2025/2026 academic year. Because the population comprised only 137 students and was fully accessible, the study used complete enumeration (census), in which all population members were included. The data consisted of students’ final grades in the Intercultural Communication and Critical Reading Comprehension courses. To ensure comparability, the grades were harmonized into a common letter-grade format and converted to grade point values for analysis while being treated as ordinal data. Spearman’s rank correlation was then employed to examine the strength and direction of the relationship between students’ achievement in the two courses. The results of the study indicated there was no significant correlation between the two variables. Spearman’s rank correlation analysis produced a correlation coefficient of ρ = 0.046, with a two-tailed significance value of p = 0.596. Since the obtained p-value was greater than the predetermined significance value of α = 0.05, the correlation was not statistically significant. This finding suggests that students’ academic achievement in the Intercultural Communication course was not meaningfully associated with their achievement in the Critical Reading Comprehension course. In other words, among the sixth-semester English Education students at Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung of the 2025/2026 academic year, no significant correlation was found between students’ academic achievement in Intercultural Communication and Critical Reading Comprehension courses.
