Abstract

Conflict is inherent to plural societies, but the rise in court disputes in Indonesia has led to judicial overcapacity, emphasising the need for local alternative dispute resolution models. This study explores the Mosque-Based Mediation Corner, an innovative community peacebuilding initiative that transforms mosques into inclusive spaces for empathetic dialogue. Anchored in Islamic principles of shūrā (consultation), ‘adl (justice), and ukhuwwah (brotherhood), the project aims to restore the mosque’s role as a social and spiritual hub. Utilising a qualitative approach based on Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), the research identifies spiritual authority, human resources, and trust as critical social capital for peaceful coexistence. The implementation of the Mediation Corner at Masjid Baitul Hakim of UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung demonstrates how religious institutions can offer accessible, non-litigative dispute resolution. Findings reveal that integrating empathy, inclusivity, and restorative dialogue enhances community cohesion and prevents conflict escalation, highlighting faith institutions’ potential to foster harmony, justice, and social sustainability in multicultural contexts. To build upon this model, future research should investigate its scalability and adaptability across different multi-religious and multicultural contexts to assess its potential for broader social sustainability.
