Abstract
Dina Nur Amalia Putri. NIM 126203212135. 2025. Student's Perception of Using Google Translate in English Translation Classes at UIN Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. H. Nursamsu, S.Pd.I. M.Pd. Keywords: translation learning, student perception, Google Translate, Machine Translation The use of digital technology in English language learning has developed rapidly and is increasingly becoming an important part in the academic process of students. One of the most widely used technologies is Google Translate, especially in translation activities that require understanding of vocabulary, language structure, and meaning context. In the context of higher education, especially in Translation learning, Google Translate is often used as a tool to speed up the process of understanding text and checking word equivalents. This study aims to explore students' views on how the use of Google Translate can help the translation learning process, especially in terms of time efficiency, vocabulary development, and understanding of translation context in academic assignments. This study aims to analyze students' perceptions of the use of Google Translate in translation learning using a qualitative approach with structured interview methods to eight sixth-semester students majoring in Translation Classes. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques to find the main themes related to students' perceptions and experiences in using Google Translate. The results showed that students have a positive perception of Google Translate because of its ease of access, time efficiency, and support in expanding vocabulary through synonym and word equivalent features. However, students also realize the limitations of Google Translate, especially in translating idioms, cultural expressions, slang, and long texts that require context understanding. In addition, students judge that Google Translate has errors in gender aspects, sentence coherence, and context accuracy. The use of Google Translate has a positive impact on increasing productivity and ability to understand vocabulary, but its influence on improving the ability to translate complex texts is still limited. Most students use Google Translate as an additional reference tool, not as a primary tool. Overall, this study concludes that Google Translate is a useful tool in the translation learning process, but still requires manual analysis skills and post-editing to produce accurate translations. This research provides important implications for the development of students' digital literacy and translation learning strategies in higher education.
