Abstract

ABSTRACT Thoyyibah, Elok Abidatut. Student Register Number. 1880510240006. 2026. An Exploration of Indonesian EFL Learners' English Acquisition Experiences Through K-Pop Fandom Activities. Thesis. English Education Department. Graduate Program. Universitas Islam Negeri Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd and Dr. Arina Shofiya, M.Pd. Keywords: Informal Digital Learning of English (IDLE), K-Pop Fandom, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), Language Input, EFL Learners The development of digital media and online fan communities has created new informal spaces where Indonesian EFL learners encounter and use English outside formal classroom instruction. K-Pop fandom is one such space, where fans from diverse linguistic backgrounds communicate primarily in English through comments, discussions, and other digital interactions. However, little is known about the specific kind of English input these communicative interactions provide, or about how Indonesian EFL learners themselves perceive their English acquisition experiences within this informal context. The research questions in this study are: (1) what kind of language input is found in communicative interaction in K-Pop fandom social media, and (2) how do Indonesian EFL learners perceive their English acquisition experiences through K-Pop fandom practices. The purpose of this study is to identify the kind of language input available through fandom-based communicative interaction and to explore how Indonesian EFL learners make sense of their English acquisition experiences in that context. The participants of this study were sixteen Indonesian K-Pop fans with five to ten years of fandom involvement and varying levels of communicative activity within their fandom communities, ranging from highly active, reciprocal interactors to predominantly receptive consumers. This study employs a qualitative research design, with data analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) as the methodological framework. The research instruments used were semi-structured interview guidelines, supported by digital artefacts such as comments, posts, and direct messages collected from participants. This study obtained the following results: (1) the language input available through fandom-based communicative interaction is layered and multimodal, encompassing lexical, pragmatic, discourse-level, and multimodal features that typically occur together rather than in isolation; (2) Indonesian EFL learners' lived experiences of English acquisition through K-Pop fandom are represented by five group experiential themes, namely a non-linear shift from anxiety toward confidence, differentiated parasocial motivation, varying degrees of social participation, a perceived functional contrast between fandom-based and classroom-based language use, and a partial, domain-specific reconstruction of self-identity as an English user.
