Abstract
Key words : Correlation, Reading Mastery and Writing Mastery. The research in this thesis is back grounded by Ali Rohmad’s statement. He said in his book that reading still becomes classical problem in this country in young generation and so does the writing. The researcher wants to prove it by conducting a research especially in mastery of reading and writing. The problems of this study are: (1) How is the reading mastery of the 4th semester students at STAIN Tulungagung? (2) How is the writing mastery of the 4th semester students at STAIN Tulungagung? (3) Is there any correlation between mastery of reading and writing of the 4th semester students at State Islamic College (STAIN) of Tulungagung?. The purposes of the study are: (1) To know the reading mastery of the 4th semester students at STAIN Tulungagung. (2) To know the writing mastery of the 4th semester students at STAIN Tulungagung. (3) To find out whether there is correlation between mastery of reading and writing of the 4th semester students at State Islamic College (STAIN) of Tulungagung. This research is correlation study and it is intended to describe the correlation between mastery of reading and writing of the 4th semester students at State Islamic College of Tulungagung. The method of collecting data is the documentation by test. The analysis technique of quantitative data used mean score and Spearman correlation formula. The research findings are: (1) Mastery of reading has had the result of the reading means value 72.2. It means in good qualification, so the reading mastery of the 4th semester students at STAIN Tulungagung was in good category level. (2) Mastery of writing has had the result of the writing means value 76.1. It is better than reading means value but still in good qualification. There for, the writing mastery of the 4th semester students at STAIN Tulungagung was also in good category level. (3) The correlation between mastery of reading and writing has had value 0.611 so there is positive correlation between mastery of reading and writing of the 4th semester students at State Islamic College of Tulungagung. This result is higher than the critical value of rho Spearman at 5% and not significance at 1% but after making evidence with t formula and t table, the result is very significance. So the null hypothesis symbolized as H0 is rejected and alternative hypothesis symbolized as H1 is received.
