The Effectiveness of using PQ4R Strategy in Teaching Student’s Reading Comprehension of Narrative Text at The First Grade of Senior High School. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Advisor: Dr. Erna Iftanti, SS., M.Pd Keyword: effectiveness, PQ4R, reading comprehension One of the techniques used in teaching reading comprehension is PQ4R strategy. It is the systematic strategy consisting of several steps. They are Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, and Review. Each step functions to optimize the students’ ability to develop the idea, gain the information and stimulate the students to recognize the new vocabularies in reading activity. This strategy is used to help students in remembering what they read and in classroom teaching learning process with reading activities. The formulation of the research problem is: how is the effectiveness of using PQ4R strategy to improve students’ reading comprehension skill of narrative text at the first grade of Senior high school? Thus, the objectives of this study: to find out the effectiveness of PQ4R strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension skill of narrative text at the first grade of senior high school. The research design used in this study was pre-experimental design with quantitative approach. The population of this study was all first grade students at MA Darul Hikmah Tulungagung, and the samples in this study was the first grade of A science class which consist of 22 students. The research instrument was a teacher-made test with multiple choice form. The data analysis was using Paired sample T-Test. The result of this study shows that the mean of the student’s reading comprehension on pretest is 66.18, and that in the posttest is 83.09. In consequence, the mean score has risen. The computation result is computed by using Paired Sample T-test, the p-value or Sig (two tailed) was 0.000. It means the above mentioned data indicates that is less than significant level 95% (α=0.05). It shows 0.000 < 0.05. It can be concluded that the student’s reading comprehension after being taught using PQ4R technique is better than before being taught using the technique. As a result PQ4R is believed to be effective towards the student’s reading comprehension. Finally, PQ4R technique can be used as a technique to teach reading comprehension for the first grade of senior high school students.
