The Effectiveness of Using Role Audience Format Topic (RAFT) Strategy on the Student’s Achievement in Writing Recount Text at SMKN 1 Bandung Tulungagung. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto.M.Pd. Keywords: Effectiveness, Writing, Raft Writing is one of the skill in English that should be mastered by the students. Writing is a complex skill because many aspects and component should be considered in writing. Writing is also important because through writing the students can develop their ideas into a good paragraph. To make writing activity more enjoyable and excited, the teacher should use an appropriate strategy. One of strategy that can be used by teacher and student in writing were RAFT strategy. RAFT strategy is acronym of Role Audience Format and Topic. This strategy is developed by Carol Santa in 1988. RAFT strategy is a system to help students understand their role as a writer, they audience they will address, the varied formats for writing, and the potential content. The question that formulated by the researcher is “Is there any significant difference score on the student’s achievement in writing recount text of the students who were taught by using RAFT strategy and those who were taught by using conventional strategy at SMKN 1 Bandung Tulungagung??”. Meanwhile, the research design in this study was quasi experimental by quantitative approach. The population of this study was a second grade student at SMKN 1 Bandung Tulungagung totaled 67 students. The number of sample is 22 students determine using purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this research are pre-test and post-test, and he researcher uses SPSS 16.0 program to process and analyze the data After conducted a study, the researcher found significant differences in pre-test and post-test result. it can be seen on the data analysed that there is a significance different of using RAFT strategy on students’ writing achievement in recount text which from mean of 35 students of experimental group is 70.51 become 77.37 after being taught by using RAFT strategy. But, there is no improvement mean of 32 students in control group from 68 become 67 but there just a little reduction, it showed that the significance value is 0.00. It means that the significance value is smaller than significance level (0.00 < 0.05). The result of significance value indicate that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It can be proved that RAFT was efective and it can be used as alternative media to teach writing recount text.
