ABSTRACT Maisyaroh, Siti. NIM. 17203153075. “The Effectiveness of Using Substitution Drill Toward Students' Ability in Simple Present Tense to The Seventh Grade of MTs Syafi'iyah Besuk-Probolinggo”. Pd Keywords : Effectiveness, Substitution Drills, Simple Present Tense Simple present tense is the most important factor in compiling simple sentences to express activities or daily habits. Although this is a tense used in daily life, students still lack mastery in this tenses. They still don't understand of -s /-es addition, use of do and does, etc. Recognizing the importance of building students’ understanding of simple present tense, teachers must take an effort to build their students' mastery of these tenses. Based on the explanation above, the researcher wants to apply substitution drill to teach simple present tense of seventh grade of MTs Syafi'iyah Besuk Probolinggo. The research problem of this research is: (1) Is there any significant difference on students’ ability in simple present before and after being taught by using substitution drills to the seventh grade of Mts. Syafi’iyah Besuk-Probolinggo?. The objectives of this research is: (1) To know the students’ ability in simple present tense before and after being taught by using substitution drills to the seventh grade of Mts. Syafi’iyah Besuk-Probolinggo.The research method of this study is pre-experimental with one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample of this research was VII A class which consisted of 21 students. The results of this research indicate that there is significant differences in students’ scores of students' abilities in simple present tense before and after using substitution drills. The average value of students before using the substitution drill is 71.86. While the average value of students after using the substitution drill is 76.29. p value (two-tailed) is 0,000 and divided to 2 because the researcher used one tailed test 0,000 / 2 = 0,000, the significance level is 0.05. Because 0,000 is smaller than the significance level (α) of 5%. The null hypothesis is rejected. It means that alternative hypotheses is accepted which say that the average value of students after using substitution drill is higher than the average value of student before using substitution drills. So the conclusion is substitution drills is effective to teach simple present tense.
