Speaking is one of the skills that must be mastered in learning a language. Speaking also the way to communicate which need ideas to process the information and conveyed through a message speaking orally. In general, many students cannot master speaking well. The majority of students’ problem in learning speaking is expressing their ideas in English orally. Most of the students get stuck and do not know what they want to say. Moreover, they cannot get opportunity to participate in speaking class. To make the students participate and be confident in speaking class, they need some topics related with their daily lives. Expressions is one of the topic that relate to their daily lives, because they are the process of making one’s thoughts or feelings. Expressions also related with the movements of the body that are called gestures or body language. To facilitate the students in improving their speaking, they needed some technique during the teaching learning process. One of the techniques used in teaching speaking class in drilling technique. Drilling is a technique that has been used in the foreign language classroom for many years. It was a key feature of audio-lingual method which placed emphasis on repeating structural pattern through oral practice. Drilling mean listen a model provided by the teacher or a tape, and another student replay what is heard. This technique facilitates the students to speak and practices in learning process. This technique makes students be more active and confident to speak up in speaking class. The formulation of the research problem is: “Is the use of Drilling technique effective to increase students’ acquisition of expressions in Speaking class?”. The purpose of this research is to know the effectiveness Drilling technique in increasing students’ mastery of expressions in speaking class. This research used pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was seventh grade students at MTs Al-Huda Bandung on academic year 2018/2019. The sample of this research was seven B class which consisted of 32 students chosen by purposive sampling. To collect data, the researcher used research instrument in form of test. To analyse the collected data, the researcher used SPSS 16.00 version software. The finding of this research showed that there is a significant difference score between the result of pre-test and post-test. The mean of post-test was 11.34 and it was higher than the mean of pre-test was 8.94. The difference mean is 2.4, it means that there was increasing score in speaking class. From statistical calculation showed that the significant value is 0.000 which was smaller than the significant level (0.050). It means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that Drilling Technique on students’ mastery of expressions in speaking class at the first grade of MTs Al-Huda Bandung is effective. In other words, drilling technique can be used as an alternative strategy to teach speaking to the students at junior high school level.
