Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar”. Thesis. English Education Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S.S. M.Pd. Keywords: effectiveness, reading comprehension, Click and Clunk Strategy. Reading is more complex than reconstructing meaning from printed or digital text. In the reading activity, students or readers have to recognize and comprehend what they read. This day, students usually find difficulties in understanding meanings and context from the text. Students are also less interested in reading paragraph especially for English text The problems are students afraid of telling that they do not understand about what happened in the text. However, the teacher needs a strategy that can make students aware to tell that they do not understand and their difficulties in reading. There are so many strategies that can be used by a teacher to help them teaching reading. One of those strategies is to Click and Clunk strategy. Click and Clunk strategy is designed to teach students to focus on their understanding and failing to understand what they are read and what is being read. This study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of ”The Effectiveness Of Click and Clunk Strategy Towards Students’ Reading Comprehension In The Second Grade Of MTs Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar”. The formulation of the research problem is: Is Click and Clunk strategy effective for teaching reading comprehension in the second grade of MTs Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar? Based on the formulation of the research problem, the objective of the research is to find out the effect of Click and Clunk strategy for teaching reading comprehension in the second grade of MTs Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar. This studyused quantitative approach with pre-experimental with one group pretest and posttest designed. The population of the research was all the students of eight class at MTs Ma’arif Bakung Udanawu Blitar consists of 365 students. The sample of this research is a class of VIII G consisting of 34 students that were selected by purposive sampling. Meanwhile, the instruments used in this study were pre-test and post-test. The data collected through pre-test and post-test were analyzed by using Paired Samples T-test with SPSS Windows 2.4 The finding showed significant differences between the result of pretest and posttest. The mean of posttest score (83,65) was higher than the mean of pretest score (63,29.). It means, that there was an increasing score on the students’ achievement. From statistical calculation showed that the significant value is 0.000 which was smaller than the significant level (0.050). It means that the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. and it could be concluded that Click and Clunk strategy was effective and it can be used as an alternative strategy in teaching reading.
