Abstract
ABSTRACT Afifah, Nurul. (1723143135. The Effectiveness of Using Information Gap Activity Toward Students’ Speaking Achievement (an Experimental Research At The Eight Grade Students in MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Klidawir). Thesis of English Education Departement at Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher’s Training State Islamic Insitute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor : Dwi Astuti Wahyu Nurhayati, S.S., M.Pd. Keyword : effectiveness, Information Gap Activity, speaking achievement Speaking skill is one important aspect for students in mastering English, because the prime goal of learning a foreign language is to be able to speak it. Through speaking students can communicate and interact with others and they can also share their idea, thought, feeling, and opinion about something. But many students feel difficult in mastering speaking. The students could not speak English well because of some factors. Those are they lacks of vocabularry, grammatical eror, mispronounciation, and sometimes they are not confidence to speak English. There are many technique that can be applied for teaching speaking. Information Gap Activity is one of it. Information Gap Activity can increase students participation and activeness in learning process. The formulation research problems was: 1) The students do not want to talk or say anything, 2) Some students feel difficulties to speak English very well and can’t produce some words, 3) The students are afraid of being citizen by other students, 4) The material do not fulfil the need of students, when school topics do not relate to students lives. Research method used in this study was quantitative method. This study used quasi-experimental with non-randomized control group, pretest-posttest design because the reseaccher could not randomly put the subject. The population of this study was all students of eight of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Tulungagung and the samples are VIII A class which consist of 19 students as experimental group and VIII B class which consist of 17 students as control group. The research instrument of this study was a test. The researcher computed independent sample test to analyze the data by using SPSS 16.0 version. The result showed that the mean score of pre-test at experimental group was 63,37 and the mean score of post-test after being taught by using Information Gap Activity was 77,47. The gain of the mean score was 14. 2) the mean score of pre-test at control group was 55,83 and the mean score of post-test after being taught without using Information Gap Activity was 71,83. The gain of the mean score was 16. 3) The result of t-test calculation showed that Sig (2- tailed) value was 0.001 which was less than 0.05. It means that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Indicated that there is significant difference score on students’speaking ix achievement between those taught by using information gap activity and those taught without using information gap activity. In other words, information gap activity is effective to use in teaching speaking at the eight grade students of MTs Aswaja Tunggangri Tulungagung.
