Abstract

The Effectiveness of Concept Sentence on Students’ Writing Ability of Recount Text at Second Grade in MTs Al Huda Kedungwaru. Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Muh. Basuni, M.Pd. Keywords: Writing Ability, Recount Text, and Concept Sentence Writing is a process to get product. Many phenomena showed that students find it difficult to learn a foreign language especially in writing. It is because the students find it difficult to get ideas that must be poured into a sentence, so students become lazy to learn write English. In addition, some aspects that cause students difficulties are (1) Students low in grammar (2) Students lack in vocabulary (3) Students law in mechanics’ language. Therefore, there needs to be an appropriate and innovative learning outcomes for students. One of the efforts is by giving Concept Sentence method. By giving this method the researcher hope that it can be increase a motivation and learning outcomes on the achievement of class VIII students of MTs Al Huda Kedungwaru in writing of recount text. The students are helped by keywords as the clue to write and a group to discuss what they written about. It can help the students write with good confidence and enjoyment. The formulation of research problem in this study: Is Concept Sentence effective for improving students' writing ability of recount text at MTs Al Huda Kedungwaru? Based on the formulation of research problem, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Concept Sentence on student achievement in writing ability of recount text. In this study the researcher used quantitative approach in preexperimental design. The population of this study was all of the second grade students at MTs Al Huda Kedungwaru that consist of 40 students. The sample of this study used purposive sampling and got class VIII A that consist of 20 students. While the research instrument used was test. The stages carried out by the researcher was pretest, treatment, and posttest. The researcher collects the data by using Paired Sample T-test with SPSS Windows 16.0. The results of this study showed that there is a significant difference between the results of the pretest and the posttest results. The average score at posttest (82.15) was higher compared to the pretest (52.65). From the results of statistical calculations, the results obtained from the value of Sig. (2-tailed) below 0.05 ie (0.00 <0.05). It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. It can be concluded that the use of Concept Sentence is effective and can be used as an alternative method to teach writing recount text at MTs Al Huda Kedungwaru.
