ABSTRACT Hasan, Moch Roni. Student Registered Number 17203153039. 2019. The Effectiveness of Place Based Education (PBE) on the Eighth Grade Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at MTsN 2 Tulungagung. Vocabulary is essential part of communication which provides much of the basis for how well learners speak, listen, read and write. The use of Place Based Education is expected to have a positive effect in increasing students’ interest in learning thus it affects their learning outcomes. In this research, students use Place Based Education as a strategy to learn vocabulary. The formulation of the research problem was “Is there any significant different score of vocabulary mastery between students’ who were taught with and without using Place Based Education strategy of the eighth grade students at MTsN 2 Tulungagung?” The objective of this research was to find out if there is any significant different score of vocabulary mastery between students’ who were taught with and without using Place Based Education strategy of the eighth grade students at MTsN 2 Tulungagung. The researcher used quasi experimental design with quantitative approach. The population was eight grade students of MTsN 2 Tulungagung. Meanwhile, the samples of this research were VIII I class as control group which consists of 36 students and VIII K class as experimental group which consists of 36 students. The researcher used purposive sampling technique. The research instruments were vocabulary test. The data of this research was analysed by using Independent Sample t-test in Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) 16.0. The result of this research showed that the mean score of students’ in experimental group before being taught by using Place Based Education is 68.75 and their mean score after being taught by using Place Based Education is 88.75. Meanwhile, the control group also has improvement of mean score from 70.56 to 76.11. However, the improvement in experimental group was higher than in control group. In addition, the result of the statistical computation using Independent Sample t-test with SPSS 16.00 showed that the significance value is 0.00 which means that the significance value is smaller than the significance level (0.00 < 0.05). Therefore, the result of significance value indicates that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. In sum, there was a significant effect of using Place Based Education on eight grade students’ vocabulary mastery at MTsN 2 Tulungagung. In other words, Place Based Education is a recommended strategy to teach vocabulary.
