Keywords: Effectiveness, Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy, Vocabulary Mastery Vocabulary is one of the core components in learning English and it is important to learn in mastery English skills. The students will have difficulties in expressing their ideas if they have limited vocabulary. To motivate the students in learning English especially vocabulary the teacher can use an interesting strategy, to create the teaching process more enjoyable. This research used Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy. Through, Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy the students can easy to understand the text when they get the unfamiliar words. The students select words from the readings that are new and interesting, use the dictionary to define the meaning of words and share with others to solve the problem. Therefore, this research is aimed to know the effectiveness of using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy toward students’ vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol in academic year 2018/2019. The formulation of the research problem was: Is there any significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy at the Seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol?. The purpose of this research was: to know whether there is a significant difference on students’ vocabulary mastery before and after being taught by using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy at the Seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol. The research design was used pre-experimental research design by using one group pre-test post-test with quantitative research approach. The population of this research was all students of seventh grade of SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol in academic year 2018/2019. The sample was all the students of seven D class in SMP Negeri 1 Sumbergempol in which the total of the students are 35 students. Meanwhile, the instrument which is used to collect the data is vocabulary test. The data was analyzed by using Paired Sample Test with SPSS program 25.0 version. The result of this research shows that the students’ score mean of their vocabulary mastery before being taught by using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy was 74.60 and after being taught by using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy was 91.26. The data computation of T-test shows that P-value (Sig) is 0.000, and it is smaller than 0.05 (0.000 <0.05). It indicated that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. In other words, the hypothesis states that the mean of post-test is smaller than or equal to the mean of pre-test, while alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted; it means that the mean of post-test is higher than the mean of pre-test. In other words, there is any significance difference of students’ score before and after being taught by using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy. It can be concluded that Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy is effective strategy for teaching vocabulary mastery at the seventh grade of SMPN 1 Sumbergempol in academic year 2018/2019. Hence, Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy can be used as an alternative strategy by English teacher in teaching and learning activity especially for teaching vocabulary mastery.
