Abstract
Writing is important for the students to learn how to think critically and creatively, the students can express their ideas and opinions in a written text. At this time, the first-grade students of MTs Darul Falah have some problems in learning writing; first the students spent much time to think what they had to write, the students had difficulties using the correct grammar in writing, and the students had low motivation in learning English. Based on the problem, using picture is one of the ways to solve the problems. The researcher used Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) as a teaching strategy to help the students’ problem in writing skill.Picture Word Inductive Model is a strategy in writing and reading by using think inductively to correlate words with the pictures. This strategy leads the students to identify each object in a picture that they describe. Through this strategy, the students felt easier to develop their descriptive writing based a picture. The research problem of this research was as follows: is there any significant difference in students’ achievement in writing descriptive text before and after being taught by using picture word inductive model (PWIM) strategy. The objective of this research was to know whether there is any significant difference in students’ achievement in writing descriptive text before and after being taught by using picture word inductive model (PWIM) strategy. The research design of this research was pre-experimental design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was the first grade students of MTs Darul Falah. The sample of this research was VII B class consisted of 28 students. The research instrument was in the form of writing test. The data analysis was using Paired Sample Test by SPSS 16.0. The result showed that the students’ mean score in pre-test was 59.86 and the students’ mean score in post-test was 81.93. In addition, the result of statistical computation used paired sample t-test with SPSS 16.0, showed that the significant value is 0.00. It means that the significance value was smaller than the significance level (0.00<0.05). The result of significance value indicates that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that there was a significant effect of using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) on students’ writing descriptive text skill at MTs Darul Falah.
