Abstract

As one of the English skills, reading is considered as a tool to access the information. By reading, the students will get much information and knowledge that is very useful for them in learning process. Reading achievement is becoming very important, but in fact many students are still having difficulty in comprehending the reading text. Thus, the teacher should provide the students with suitable teaching strategy to help students increase their reading comprehension. One strategy that can be used by teacher and students in reading is 3-2-1 Strategy. It is a reading strategy that requires students’ participation on summarizing ideas from the text, encourages them to think independently, and invite them to engage with the text. Based on explanation above, the writer intended to apply 3-2-1 Strategy to increase students’ reading comprehension of recount text in the eighth grade at MTs Darul Huda Wonodadi. The formulation are of research problems in this study: (1)How is the students’ achievement of recount text taught by using 3-2-1 strategy? (2)How is the students’ achievement of recount text taught without using 3-2-1 strategy? (3)Is there any significant different scores of students’ reading achievement of recount text taught by using 3-2-1 strategy and without using 3-2-1 strategy? The objectives of this research are: (1)To investigate the students’ achievement of recount text taught by using 3-2-1 strategy. (2)To investigate the students’ achievement of recount text taught without using 3-2-1 strategy. (3)To find out whether there is significant different scores of students’ reading achievement of recount text taught by using 3-2-1 strategy and without using 3-2-1 strategy. Method of this research: The researcher used Quasi-Experimental research using quantitative approach with experimental class and control class. The population of this study was all the eighth grade students at MTs Darul Huda Wonodadi. The sample of experimental group was VIII B and the sample of control group was VIII A. The results of this study showed that there is significant different scores of students’ reading achievement of recount text taught by using 3-2-1 strategy and without using 3-2-1 strategy in the eighth grade at MTs Darul Huda Wonodadi. It can be seen from the mean of students’ score of experimental group that taught by using 3-2-1 Strategy on students’ reading achievement was 78.67. While the mean of students’ score of control class that without using 3-2-1 Strategy was 61.36. The P-value (Sig. 2-tailed) is 0.000 and the significance level is 0.05. Since 0.000 is smaller than significance level (α) 5%. The null hypothesis is rejected. In other word, the hypothesis saying that the mean of experimental group is smaller than or equal to the mean of control one is rejected. The conclusion is that 3-2-1 Strategy is effective for increasing students’ reading achievement of recount text.
