Abstract
Keywords : teaching, vocabulary, English Young Learner, story book Vocabulary is considered one of the foundations for the students as young learners of English as a foreign language. To be able to learn English well, a learner should master English skills and components. Vocabulary is also taken into account as underlying basic for learning English skills and other English component, namely pronunciation and grammar. Therefore, teaching vocabulary effectively needed to be considered, and one of the ways in teaching vocabulary is making use of the media such as story book. Accordingly, the researcher uses story book as media to teach vocabulary which is intended to improve the student’s vocabulary achievement. The formulation of the research problems are: 1) How is the student’s vocabulary achievement taught without using story books? 2) How is the student’s vocabulary achievement taught by using story books? 3) Are there any significant different scores without and with being taught by using story books? The purpose of this study are: 1) To know the student’s vocabulary achievement taught without using story book, 2) To know the student’s vocabulary achievement taught without and with using story book, 3) To know whether there are any significant different scores taught without and with using story book. The research design of this study is experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was the fourth grade students in the SDN II Wajaklor Boyolangu Tulungagung, 3) the sample is used population sampling, the fourth grade students of SDN II Wajaklor Boyolangu that consist of A class as experimental group and B class as controlling group. There are 22 students in A class and 22 students in B class, 4) the data analysis is done by using T test. The result shows that the mean of student’s score in teaching vocabulary by using regular model is 7.77. While the mean of student’s score in teaching vocabulary by using story book is 15.04. The Tcount was 2.47, whereas Ttable with significant level 5% was 2.02. so, Tcount was greater than Ttable. This means that Ha which states that there is significant different score of the students who are taught with and without story book. Whereas, Ho states that there is no significant different score of the students who are taught with and without story book. In other words, story book can be used as an effective way to teach vocabulary to the students at elementary level.
