Abstract

Key word: conflict, main character Literature is portrait of life, and it describes a true picture of human’s life. A form literature is a literary work that presents fictional and real world. There are many kinds of literary works such as novel, poetry, drama. Novel can be real and unreal human’s experience. Meanwhile, human life is very complex with many conflicts and challenges. They are also depicted with in novel. The formulation of the study: 1) What are internal conflicts faced by the main character? 2) What are external conflicts faced by the main character? 3) How is the plot in the novel? The purpose of the study: 1) To explain internal conflicts faced by the main character,2) To explain external conflicts faced by the main character,3) To explain the plot in Steve Knickmeyer’s “straight”. The research design used in this study is descriptive qualitative method based on its purposes and the types of data. He also used psychological approach. The data collecting method is documentation. The procedures of collecting data are: reading the Steve Knickmeyer’ Straight repeatedly, reading critic literature on Steve Knickmeyer, finding out the conflicts, selecting and picking the data up which relate the problems. Then, the writer used the instrument of collecting data that is the writer him self. Based on the research findings and discussion, the writer gets to know the character in Steve knickmeyer’s straight, the characterization on straight, the main character conflict, they are external conflict and internal conflict. The external conflicts happen to some the characters. Such as straight and August McEachern(straight wants complaints him to give another choice ) straight and Coady (straight wants to take revenge on Coady who have kill his wife, Jill) straight and Mr. Rope (straight wants Mr. Rope to tell what he done when was in Taber’s house) straight and Steve Cranmer (straight wants to kill Cranmer who is investigate behind Taber’s death)
