Abstract
ABSTRACT Kurniati, Nia. Registered Number Student: 12510174035. 2019. Hedges in ELT Classroom Discourse. English Language and Teaching Program. School of Graduate Studies. State Islamic Institute of Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd and Dr. Sukarsono, M.Pd. Keywords: Hedges, Cooperative principle, Classroom discourse. When human interact with others, they use language as the tools to get the communicative competence between the addresser and the addressee. Making a communicative competence, sometimes the addresser should hedge his/her utterances so that the addressee does not feel that the addresser hedged him/her by prefacing hedges in the addressers’ statements, the addressee understand more what have explained by the addresser, and the addresser should avoid misundertanding relationship with the addressee. Hedges are an expression used by the addresser when they are not sure to observe cooperative principle (Yule, 1996). Hedges are found in oral and written language. Whereas, in the oral languages, hedges can occur in a communication between two or more people. In classroom discourse, there are also hedges in the utterances of the class communities. For example; lecturer lectures, communication between lecturer and students, communication between students and students, and others. The research study of this study is qualitative research which discourse analysis. It is intended to investigate the types of hedges are used by lecturers and students in the classroom and also the reason why particularly hedges are employed more than others by lecturer and student. The data are the lecturers’ and students’ utterances containing hedges with their context situation and the reason why particularly hedges employed more than others by lecturers and students are in English language and teaching program of school of graduate students of IAIN Tulungagung at second semester in the academic year 2019. The data are taken from the utterances and informant. The utterance used in this research is lecturers 'utterances and students' utterances. And then, the researcher also used information from informants to make sure that they know what they have said is hedges and find out the reason why particularly they were using these types of hedges. The researcher found that from 5 lecturers, only 4 lecturers who use hedges in their utterances. Then, the types of hedges that used by the lecturers only 20 utterances containing hedges of quality maxim, 2 utterances containing hedges of quantity maxim, and only 1 utterance containing hedges of relation maxim. However, there are no utterances containing hedges of manner maxim of English lecturers’ utterances. After that, only 12 students who used hedges in their utterances from 35 students. The types of hedges that used by the students only 33 utterances containing hedges of quality maxim, 1 utterance containing hedges of quantity maxim, and only 1 utterance containing hedges of relation maxim. However, there are no utterances containing hedges of manner maxim of English students’ utterances. Later, the reason why particularly hedges are employed more than others are, to make the addressee believe more and understand more with the addresser’s explanation, to avoid misunderstanding in their relationship, to make the utterance more polite, to preface the addresser’s ashamed and confusing. That’s why, it is better if the lecturers and the students use more types of hedges in their utterances when having communication with others. Because when they used hedges more often in their utterances, it shown that their pragmatic competence and level of language mastery that they have was getting better.
