Abstract
Zuwaidah, Anisatu. Registered Student. 17203163134. 2020. The Correlation between Students’ English Proficiency and Their Statistics Competence of English Department at IAIN Tulungagung in Academic Year 2016/2017. Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyh and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah, M.Pd. Keyword: English proficiency, Correlation, Statistics English language proficiency is one's ability to understand and produce English, including reading and writing and others. English language proficiency is also categorized into several levels: Basic, Low Intermediate and high intermediate. To test English Proficiency, usually use a written test called Test of English Proficiency (TOEP). English language proficiency can also be used as a gauge of the ability of students to understand non-English subjects, especially statistics courses. English language proficiency can also be used as a gauge of the ability of students to understand non-English subjects, especially statistics courses. The formulation of the research problems was: 1) is there any significant correlation between students’ English Proficiency and their Statistics Competence? The purpose of this research was to: 1)To find out whether there is a significant correlation between students' English proficiency and their statistical competence. 2) To find out the factors that influence student success in statistical and TOEP scores. Research method: 1) the researcher uses quantitative approach and the design employed is correlational research, 2) the population of this research was the sixth semester students of IAIN Tulungagung in academic year 2016/2017, 3) 50 students from 5 classes that choose from random sampling as the sample, 4) the research instrument was documentation, 5) the data analysis was using Pearson Product Moment correlation. The result showed that the correlation coefficient equaled r = 0.114, which indicated that there was positive correlation between two variables. This research was positive correlation because the variables had same moderate score, if the subjects had low score in TOEP, they also had low score in statistics. Concerning the null hypothesis, this research reveals that the null hypothesis can't be rejected because the SPSS 16.0 calculation shows that the Sig is 0.432. As already known, the null hypothesis is rejected if the significance is less than 0.05. The hypothesis testing concludes that N. Sig > 0.05, where H0 automatically rejected. It means that both students’ English proficiency and their statistics competence are correlates. Therefore, the final results of this study indicate that there is low significant correlation between students' English Proficiency and their Statistics at IAIN Tulungagung in the 2016/2017 academic year.
