Abstract

ABSTRACT Mubayyinah, Khusnul. Student Registered Number 17203163224. An Analysis on Language Function of Miles Morales in “Spider- Man: Into the Spider-Verse” Movie Script. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor : Faizatul Istiqomah, M.Ed. Keywords: Language Function, Movie, Script Language function is a specific purpose, whether apologizing, expressing a wish, or asking permission to fulfill our purposes. In Education, language function important to increase students’ skills of using language and teach them how to do so on formal features of language, like: how to greet people, how to maintain polite contact while listening on the telephone, using language function based on its purposes. In a movie, language function can make the audience understand the message easily. This research was actually conducted in order to make people understand about the function of language function that they used to communicate each other. The statement of the research problem was: What kind of language functions found in the script of the movie “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”?. Then, the objective of the research was to know the kind of language functions found in the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” movie script. In this research, the researcher used library research. It used primary and secondary data sources. The materials are about “Spider- Man: Into the Spider-Verse” movie script and the other data in the some of books or internet, which supported the study. The data collecting method used is documentation. The researcher used it to collect data of the “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” movie script. The researcher used the Cook’s theory to analyse the language functions, they are: emotive function, directive function, phatic function, poetic function, referential function, metalinguistic function and contextual function. In analysing the data, the researcher used data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The result of this research showed that from the seven types of language function proposed by Cook’s theory, there are emotive, directive, phatic, poetic, referential, metalinguistic, and contextual function. From those seven data, the type of emotive function that often used by Miles.
