Abstract
ABSTRACT Thesis with the title “ The Implementation of English Conversation at Islamic Boarding School (Al Mawaddah 2)” is written by Asvinia Fauziyah .Thesis.English Education Department. Magister Program. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisors: Dr. H. Nursamsu,S.Pd.I.,M.Pd. and Dr. Erna Iftanti, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: English Conversation Program, Preparation, Implementation, Evaluation, Al Mawaddah 2 Islamic Boarding School This study seeks to investigate the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of English Conversation program at Al Mawaddah 2 Islamic Boarding School. This case study was carried out in the context of an Islamic boarding schoolknown to have an excellent English program. Using simple purposive sampling, a teacher, an administrator, and a student at the school who are in charge of running the program were selected as the participants of this study. Some techniques of qualitative data collection were employed in this study such as interview and documentation. The data were initially explored by coding the data and grouping the codes into the themes. Then, the data were displayed by using tables, figures, and narratives. Finally, the conclusion was drawn. Several major findings of this studyare: (1) the teachers of Al Mawaddah 2 collaborate with the Student Organization (OSWAH)in preparing English conversation program. The prepared materials include vocabulary, common expressions, and wise words. (2)There are some types of programs including daily program (vocabulary, sentences, and common expressions); weekly program (conversation, speech, and debate); and annual program (language fair and English competitions). All the programs are organized by OSWAH under the teachers’ supervision. (3) In evaluating the result of English Conversation program, the teachers conducted a scheduled conversation test. OSWAH is in charge of observing the students’ mistakes in using English. Al Mawaddah 2 also generates internal English competitions to evaluate the students’ progress, in addition to participating the students in other English competitions to help identify the outcome of English programs. Apart from the problems in the preparation, implementation, and evaluation of English Conversation program, the evidence would appear to suggest that the program is clearly effective to make the students able to communicate in English.
