ABSTRACT Anggraini, dwi. Students Register Number. 17203163215. An Analysis of Complex Sentence in Brothers Grimm’s Fairytale entitled “Two Brothers”. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Faizatul Istiqomah, M.Ed. Keyword: Complex Sentence, Fairytale, Two Brothers This research is focused on syntactic analysis. syntactic analysis concern with structure of the sentence. The purpose of syntactic analysis are used to combine words into phrases and phrases into sentences, used to specify the grammatical relations of a sentence, such as subject and direct object and also used to how the structure of the sentence. Sentence have many types based on number of formal prediction: there are simple, compound, complex and compound-complex sentence. This research focused on complex sentence, complex sentence is one independent clause and at least one dependent clause. Complex sentence based on the connection between independent and dependent clause, classified into three: subordinate word, relative pronoun, and question word. Based on explanation above the researcher interested to analysis complex sentence in “Two Brothers” fairytale. The discussion of this thesis based on the statement of the problem (what are types and dominant of complex sentences in “Two Brothers” fairytale). And the objective of this research is to categorize complex sentences in “Two Brothers” fairytale and to analyze the structure of complex sentence based on word classes and phrases. The research approach of this study was descriptive-qualitative approach. So, this research was library research. The primary data source was Two Brothers fairytale and the secondary data source was the book that relevant with the theory of complex sentence. The researcher collected the data by documentation technique. It was done by read, analyze and both of the fairytale and also measurement the result of the analysis. According to data analysis, it concluded that complex sentence found in Two Brothers fairytale was 120 complex sentence. There were subordinate word, relative word, and question word. The dominant of complex sentence that used relative pronoun. After the researcher was known the structure of complex sentence, the researcher found the conclusion of this thesis that the complex sentence was more complete sentence, interesting sentence and more easy when read that simple and compound sentence, because the complex sentence there is dependent and independent clause. Dependent clause (sub clause) could not stand alone but it has function when connected with independent clause. The function of dependent clause is make independent clause more clearly and complete though
