English Education Department, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Nursamsu, M.Pd. Keyword : speaking anxiety, factor of speaking anxiety, strategies to reduce speaking anxiety Speaking helps students develop their vocabulary and grammar skills and can also improve their writing skills. However, speaking is considered the most difficult skill because most students usually experience difficulties and they have difficulty expressing ideas even in the form of simple conversations. It takes a lot of courage and preparation to speak well in a new language. They have to learn about grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary at the same time. However, it is not easy to master speaking, especially for students who have low self-esteem. Anxiety makes students hesitate to speak English because they feel anxious about making mistakes when speaking in English. They may learn less and also may not be able to demonstrate what they have learned to put into practice. Worse, they may experience more failures, which in turn increases their anxiety. And because of this, the students must be able to use appropriate strategies to reduce their anxiety. The purpose of this research are (1) to identify the factors that cause students’ anxiety in speaking English in the classroom, and (2) to know the students’ strategies to overcome their anxiety in speaking English in the classroom. This research used qualitative research. Sources of data from this study were fifth semester students from class 5B majoring in TBI at IAIN Tulungagung. The instruments of this study were interviews. To gain trust, this study uses triangulation. The results of this study indicate that the causes of speaking anxiety during interactions in class are lack of preparation, learners' belief about language learning, fear of making mistakes, and fear of classmates. And the strategies used by students to reduce speaking anxiety are preparation, relaxation, and positive thinking.
