Millati, Zuyyina. Student Registered Number. 12203173004. 2021. Figurative Languages Used in Maya Angelou’s Selected Poems. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung Advisor : Dr. Susanto, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords : Figurative Language, Poem, analysis Figurative language is categorized as an implied meaning, in the sentence used in figurative language is not the real meaning but it is the connotative meaning. Figurative language is classified into ten types those are Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole, Simile, Metonymy, Synecdoche, Irony, Antithesis, Symbolism, Paradox. This research focus on kind of figurative Language, the dominant Figurative languages, and the function of the dominant figurative language found by the researcher in the five selected poems written by Maya Angelou. There were three statements of research questions in this research. The first research question was what are the figurative languages found in Maya Angelou’s selected poems? The second was what is the dominant figurative language used in Maya Angelou’s selected poems? The third was how does Maya Angelou use figurative languages that are frequently used in her poems? This research was categorized into library research. The method used in this research was the descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research was five selected poems written by Maya Angelou those are Caged Bird, Phenomenal Woman, Still I Rise, On The Pulse of Morning, and A Brave and Startling Truth. The data of this research was obtained from the five selected poems written by Maya Angelou. The steps of collecting the data was, 1) search and collect the data 2) select five poems of Maya Angelou, 3) Read and understand the selected poems, 4) identifying the data line by line, 5) classifying the data into several types of figurative language, 6) classifying the data into the dominant figurative Language. The procedure of data analysis was, 1) Identifying and reading the data, 2) Analyzing the data, 3) Classifying the data, and 4) Interpreting the data. Based on the analysis, The Findings revealed that, 1) The researcher found there were seven kinds of figurative language used by Maya Angelou in her five selected poems. They were Metaphor, Personification, Hyperbole, Simile, Irony, Symbolism, and Paradox, 2) The researcher also found the dominant figurative language used in the selected poems of Maya Angelou. They were Metaphor and Personification, 3) Maya Angelou uses both Metaphor and Personification as the dominant figurative language used in her selected poems to provide a parable and meaning in every stanza of selected poems that described a true story about her life.
