Abstract

Keywords: Instructor’s Practices, Teaching Speaking, Hospitality Students, English Instructor The general problem of this research is “How are teaching speaking practices conducted by English instructor at Study Hotel Executive Kediri?” This problem can be questioned as 1) How is the instructor's preparation for teaching speaking at Study Hotel Executive Kediri? 2) What are the activities or strategies conducted by the instructor in teaching speaking at Study Hotel Executive Kediri? The general objective of this research is to describe the instructor’s practices in teaching speaking at Study Hotel Executive Kediri. Then, the purpose can be specifically stated on how the instructor instructs the students to speak hospitably including preparation and what activities or strategies implemented at Study Hotel Executive Kediri in the academic year 2020/2021. The research design of this research was descriptive design with qualitative approach. Data source of this research were English instructor and 15 students of Study Hotel Executive Kediri. The data of this research were obtained through conducting interview, doing observation, making field note, and documentation. Then, the data were analyzed using interactive analysis method by Miles and Huberman covering data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. As result of this research, the researcher found that the there are some practices of teaching speaking at Study Hotel Executive Kediri by implementing presentation, role play, teaching games, and discussion. Besides that, the instructor also delivered the material by presenting the related video taken from Sophie Grenaurer youtube channel. In delivering this material, it is also supported by appropriate and up to date additional material and media (power point). In addition, the instructor spoke English as the main language in delivering material which is given both in fluency and accuracy, giving feedback and correction, motivate students to practice English by sharing his experiences. The activities such discussion and presentation, and also role play are commonly used in teaching speaking at Study Hotel Executive Kediri. Moreover, in assessing the student’s speaking skill, the instructor assessed structure, fluency, vocabulary, composition, reading and memorization in English for Hotel subject. The result shows that 3 students got <60, 4 students got <70,5 students got <80 and 2 students got <90. The lowest score is 68, the top value is 93,5 and the mean value is 80 out of 14 students.
