A Study on Students’ Errors in Using Transition Words Made by The Second Year Students of English Education Department at IAIN Tulungagung in Writing Paragraph. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Hj. Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keywords: Error, Error Analysis, Transition Words, Paragraph Transition word is one of the important things that should be used in writing paragraph. It is used to connect one sentence to another sentence. That matter made the readers more easily understand the related of the sentence or paragraphs. The transition words provide coherence to a story, help the writer bridge the gap between the idea, and provide the reader understanding of continued that related to sustainable sentences in the writing and felt enjoy when reading a paragraph. However, it is still a problem to the study especially in online teaching learning process. In this case, the researcher wants to know a study on students’ errors in using transition words in writing paragraphs taught using online learning. The formulation of research problems are; (1) What types of transition words errors are found in students’ paragraphs taught using online learning made by the second years’ students of English education department at IAIN Tulungagung in academic year 2020/2021? (2) How is the frequency of each type of transition words found error in writing paragraphs? (3) What are the reasons that contribute to the errors? This research used a quantitative approach with descriptive design. The population consists of 162 students of the second year English Education department of IAIN Tulungagung in academic years 2020/2021. The total number of sample was 35 students using the purposive sampling technique. The method of data collection used in this research was documentation and interview. In the analysis result, the researcher found 29 omission (66%), 5 addition (11%), and 10 misformation (23%). The highest frequency of transition words errors is an omission which consists of 29 errors. The reasons that contributed to the errors were less understanding of transition words, confused in using transition words, and familiarity with mother tongue, using their knowledge to translate and identify the function of transition words, confused with lecturer explanation and the material of transition words in online learning, and misunderstanding the use transition words and any difficulties in creating a paragraph with the placement of transition words correctly.
