Abstract

ABSTRACT Pratiwi, Suci Meilan: Student Registered Number: 12203173083, 2021. The Effectiveness of Using Four Squares Writing Method towards Students’ Writing Descriptive Text at Seventh Grade of Fathul Hidayah Junior High School Pangean Lamongan. English Education Department. Keywords: Writing, Four Squares Writing Method, Descriptive Text This research motivated by the difficulties of students in developing their ideas into written forms that can be understood and readable. There are several methods used to teaching writing especially descriptive text. The method known as four squares writing method. Four squares writing method is a tool to organizing ideas, concept as well as promote thinking before start to write. Therefore, this Four Squares Writing Method expected to help students in developing their ideas in order that students produced the unity and good writing. This research purposed to know whether there is significant difference score or not between experimental class and control class. The researcher used quasi-experimental research design. Since the research design was quasi, so there are two groups been subjects of this research. The first group as an experimental group and the second group as control group. The population used in this research was all students of seventh grade at Fathul Hidayah Junior High School Pangean Lamongan. The sample were students of seventh D class consisted of 22 students as experimental class and the seventh E class consisted of 20 students as control class. Sampling technique used in this research to choose the sample was purposive sampling, it is kinds of non-probability sampling. The research instrument of this research was a test. Then, the data analyzed by using Independent sample T-test of SPSS 16.0. The research finding showed that four squares writing method was effective to use in teaching writing descriptive text. The effectiveness proved by the result of statistical calculation. The mean score of experimental class was higher than the mean score of control class. The mean of experimental was (76.45). The mean of control class was (66.00). The t-test calculation showed that T= (6.169) with the df = (40), and the p value (two tailed) was (0.000) which is lower than 0.05 (0.000 < 0.05). Based on the result of t-test can be concluded that the null hypothesis rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It can be stated that there is significant difference score in students’ writing descriptive text between students taught by using Four Squares Writing Method and students taught without using Four Squares Writing Method. In conclusion, the use of Four Squares Writing Method can increase students’ writing in descriptive text at Fathul Hidayah Junior High School Pangean Lamongan.
