Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty Of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Of Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Sukarono, M.Pd. Keywords: derivational affixes, inflectional affixes, mistake, vocabulary. Vocabulary is one of language component that has an substantial role to improving skills in English, especially in writing. In writing activities, variations of vocabulary in application affect the process of conveying ideas. To improve this vocabulary skill, the basic thing that should be done by students is to have a deep understanding on affixes. In English, affixes can be classified: derivational affixes and inflectional affixes. In this study, the researcher finds out about: 1.) What are the types of Derivational and inflectional affixes used in Academic Writing by the student of English Education Department in IAIN Tulungagung? 2.) Why do students of English Education Department in IAIN Tulungagung make mistakes of Derivational and Iflectional Affixes in Academic Writing? The reaserch method used is a qualitative research method with the research subjects from 6 students of TBI 4A at IAIN Tulungagung and data from their writings obtained of Academic Writing. The results of this study are the type of Derivational and Inflectional Affixes used by students.The derivational affixes there is a nominalizer with the affixes of -ment, -er, -ance, -ity and -ness. Then in the adjective type that I get include of the affixes -ary, -ous, -ent, -able, -ful, -ive, -al, -ary. Meanwhile, in the adverbializer type, there is only one attribute, namely -ly. The last, type of verbalizer is characterized by -ize, -ure, -ence and -ed. In addition to derivative affixes, inflectional affixes are also very common where there is a plural suffix with the affix -s or -es in nouns The third person – singular present tense suffix with -s in verb, present participle suffixes with -ing suffix, past participle suffix with -ed suffix, possessive suffix –‘s, comparative degree suffix -er and superlative degree suffix -est. From all affixes that used by students, it has some mistake in used present participle suffixes, third person suffixes and past participle suffixes because of archi-form, omission and regulation type. After knowing that, the researcher did interview about the reason of they made that mistake. The researcher got conclusion if they lack of knowledge about affixes dan lack of concentration in doing that task.
