Abstract
ABSTRACT Bandi, Linisasin Ba Putri. Student Registered Number. 12203183169. 2022. The Effect of Using THIEVES (Title, Heading, Introduction, Every First Sentence, Visual, End-of-chapter, and Summary) Strategy towards the Eighth Grade Students’ Reading Comprehension Achievement in Descriptive Text at SMPN 1 Trenggalek. Sarjana Thesis. English Education Department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Nany Soengkono Madayani, S.S., M.Pd. Keywords: Effect, THIEVES Strategy, Reading Comprehension Achievement, Descriptive Text. Reading comprehension is one of the important materials in teaching and learning English. In reading comprehension, students are asked to be able to understand the text. However, students have difficulties on it. An interesting strategy is necessary, one of them is THIEVES strategy. This strategy can help students to understand the text by stealing information before read the whole text. The purpose of this research was to find out whether there is a significant difference score on reading comprehension between eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Trenggalek that were taught by using THIEVES strategy and those that were not taught by using THIEVES strategy or not. The research methods of this study were: 1) The research design was quasi experimental with two group post-test only and using quantitative approach. 2) The population of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Trenggalek which consisted of 272 students. 3) The sample of this study was two classes; the experimental class and the control one chosen through purposive sampling technique which consisted of 62 students. 4) The research instrument was a test. 5) The technique of data analysis was T-test. The result of this study showed that the mean post-test score in the control class was 68.46, while the mean post-test score in the experimental class was 80.17. The t value was 4.106, with the df = 54, and the P-value was 0.000. It showed that the P-value was smaller than 0.05, so the null hypothesis was rejected. In other words, the alternative hypothesis was accepted which meant that there was a significant difference score on reading comprehension between eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Trenggalek that were taught by using THIEVES strategy and those that were not taught by using THIEVES strategy. It meant that THIEVES strategy was effective to use as an alternative strategy for teaching reading descriptive text to the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Trenggalek.
