ABSTRACT Oktarina, Nadila. Student Register Number. 12203173033. 2022. Conflict Analysis of The Main Character in Haunted: Possession Novel By Lee Mountford.Thesis. English Education Departement. State Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Hj. Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Keywords: Analysis, Conflict, Main character. Literature is a tool that can be used to express human emotion and ideas. Novel is an example of literature which frequently used in expressing feeling. In novel,there are several elements which build up the story. The one of the elements is conflict, this element has an important role to make how good the story is. By analyzing conflict, we can find the problems faced in life and be wise in overcoming the problems. The formulation of the research problems were: 1) What kinds of conflicts are found in the main character in “Haunted: Possession Novel by Lee Mountford “?, 2)How are the main character conflicts built in the plot of the “Haunted: Possession Novel by Lee Mountford “?. This research was conducted using the descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this study was a Haunted: Possession Novel By Lee Mountford. The result of this study revealed that there are three types of conflicts were found, those are psychological, physical, and sociological conflict. Psychological conflict happens when a character struggles against himself such as his guilt, conscience, or his own desire. For instance when Sarah feel nauseous because of paranormal activity. Physical conflict occurs when an individual character struggle against nature. The character may against other characters, animals, or natural forces. For example, the fight that happen when Sarah’s team want to stop the devil’s prayer. Sociological conflict happens when the character’s placed in the opposite with society, the government, culture, and another side. The example of this conflict is Sarah is shock about the Church building facts because of skulls of human corpsea is normal displaying at there. Besides, the main character’s conflicts built in the plot has through the several steps. Those are: 1) Exposition : When they do investigation on Chillingham Castle, Sarah meets the ghost of boy who is afraid because of black shadow with her. 2) Complication: As soon as Sarah entered the entrance of the church, she feel nauseous. They also didn’t expect about Father Hus condition. 3) Climax: Apparently Sister Maria is Herman’s person and she is possessed by devil too. 4) Falling action: They had succeeded, both of the devils had been successfully exorcised. 5) Resolution: the condition of the church is still close to public, but then everything is already cleared up.
