Abstract

Figurative language is defined as language that use words or idioms that have a meaning that differs from the literal meaning. Figurative language uses a few words that go beyond their ordinary meaning. It requires the readers to use his/her imagination to figure out the writer's meaning. Figurative language can be used in any kind of communication, including music. Music can also be found in movies. It known as a soundtrack. There are numerous kinds of soundtrack movie out there using figurative language. One of them is ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtrack movie. The Greatest Showman is an American musical drama, so all of the characters in 'The Greatest Showman' sing in this movie. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who worked together on "La La Land," have written nine original songs for this film. One of them is 'This is Me' which was released as a promotional tune for the film in December 2017 and has since been a massive hit for singer Keala Settle, with over 30 million views on YouTube. It was nominated for an Academy Award and won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song. The formulation of this research are: (1) what kinds of figurative language are found in the lyrics of 'The Greatest Showman' movie soundtrack? And (2) what are the connotative meanings of the figurative language used in the lyrics of 'The Greatest Showman' movie soundtrack? The purpose of this research are: (1) to analyze the types of figurative language that are found in the lyrics of 'The Greatest Showman' movie soundtrack and (2) to understand the meaning of figurative language that are found in the lyrics of 'The Greatest Showman' movie soundtrack. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative descriptive method to analyze figurative languages and its meaning in the lyrics of ‘The Greatest Showman’ soundtracks. This research used the theory of figurative language from Perrine theory. The researcher discovered 101 song lyrics containing figurative language from the soundtrack of The Greatest Showman Movie. There are 2 paradoxes, 33 symbols, 3 similes, 30 hyperboles, 15 personifications, 5 metaphor, 8 metonymies and 5 synecdoche. The most dominant figurative language is symbol. The researcher hopes the results of this research will help the students to better understand figurative language. The researcher also hope that this research will provide new and useful information that can be useful as a reference for future research especially on figurative language and meaning.
