Abstract

English has been introduced to children as a school subject since they were in elementary school as FL (foreign language). Indonesian elementary school students who learn English are categorized as young learner because their ages span from 6 to 12. Young learners’ characteristics differ from adult learners’ characteristics in learning English, thus the teacher must pay special attention to the students during the learning process. The learning method implementation at SD Negeri II Geger has changed with the implementation of online learning to limited direct learning in a time of high and dangerous transmission of the COVID-19 virus. Students are having numerous difficulties learning English as a result of the changes in the learning system. This research aims to comprehend the difficulties encountered by young learners in learning English during COVID-19 pandemic, the factors that caused it, and to describe how the English teacher overcome it. To analyse this case, the researcher applied qualitative descriptive methodology with data collection through observation and interviewed 5 informants, namely an English teacher and four fifth-grade students. The findings of this research state that the students faced varieties difficulties in learning English through online learning and limited face-to-face learning implementation during pandemic that affected by number of factors including internal and external factors. It was considered that the teacher’s ways were effective in overcoming the obstacles that students faced while learning at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic era. Students be able to lessen their problems as a result of the teacher’s way to help the students achieve learning objectives that have been determined. Due to the challenges faced by students, the teacher devises a number of strategies to overcome the difficulties until the teacher simulates students understanding reaching 80 percents until it is felt to be effective in applying it.
