Keywords: pragmatics, context, speech act, directive acts Language becomes the most important tool in communication, without language people cannot communicate one to other. However, when we communicate to other, we cannot blindly forget about the context. It is because one utterance may be going to be different if it is put into different context. So that way, learning language use based on its context also important. Then, Austin (1962) believes that when someone is producing an utterance that person is not only uttering something but also doing an act, which called speech act. In addition, deals with communicative purpose, in order to expressing wishes, people are producing directive act. Directive act is utterance that drives the hearer to do something to the speaker, which also enables speaker to impose hearer to do that. Directive act deals with the speaker‘s whishes and it binds the strong relationship between the speaker and the hearer, because even though directive act is uttered by the speaker but the successes of that act also influenced by the hearer. So that way, directive becomes the interesting topic to be analyzed. In this study, there was three research problems composed, which comprise (1) What types of directive acts are found in conversation fragment of The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown? (2) What formal patterns of directive acts are found in conversation fragments of The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown? (3) How frequency of type of directive acts found in conversation fragment of The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown? This study was aimed to answer the research problem, which comprise: (1) To know what types of directive acts found in conversation fragment of The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown, (2) To know what formal patterns of directive acts found in conversation fragments of The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown. (3) To know how frequency of type of directive acts found in conversation fragment of The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown. The methodology was applied in this study comprise with 1. The research method of this study was descriptive quantitative survey. 2. The population of this study was all utterances in conversation fragments in The Da Vinci Code containing directive acts. 3. The sampling technique used to collect samples was purposive sampling. 4. The instrument of this study was document. 4. The researcher used Searle’s theories of directive acts in analyzing the data. The result of this study indicated that The types of directive acts found in conversational fragments of The Da Vinci Code novel by Dan Brown were commanding/ordering act (102 utterances), prohibiting act (24 utterances), requesting act (27 utterances), asking act (43 utterances), inviting act (9 utterances), permitting act (9 utterances), recommending act (14 utterances), entreating act (3 utterances), and challenging act (1 utterances). The frequency of each type of directive act found in The Da Vinci Code novel were commanding/ordering act consisting of 54.31%, prohibiting act consisting of 10.34%, requesting act consisting of 11.64%, asking act consisting of 18.53%, inviting and permitting act consisting of 3.87%, recommending act consisting of 6.03%, entreating act consisting of 1.29%, and challenging act consisting of 0.43%. Based on the result of the study, the researcher wants to give suggestion for the students, teacher, and future researcher. The students can observe further about kinds of directive acts used in expressing wishes in appropriate way based on the context. The teacher may take some examples to teach speaking, especially in the ways of using directive act in expressing wishes. The future researchers are suggested to develop their study in more specific types of directive act.
