The Effectiveness of Using Song toward the Students’ Achievement in Writing Descriptive Text to the Second Grade Students of SMPN 1 Besuki Tulungagung. Thesis. English Education Department. Keywords: effectiveness, Song, descriptive text Due to students’ problems and difficulties to learn English writing skill, it is the teachers’ job to choose a suitable media in teaching English writing skill. One of the media used in teaching writing descriptive text in globalization era is song. In this media, students learn to generate their ideas in writing descriptive text by using song. Learning English by using Song will get a lot of benefits, can generate the students ideas to write and make easy to help students getting ideas to increase their writing ability. Therefore, I believe that Song could help the students increase their writing ability. In this study, the writer tried to know the effectiveness of listening to song towards teaching writing. The formulation of the research problems are: 1) How is the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text before being taught by using listening to song? 2) How is the students’ achievement in writing descriptive text after being taught by using listening to song? 3) Is there any significant difference ability of the students before being taught by using listening to song and after being taught by using listening to song? The purpose of this study were to: 1) To know the students’ ability in writing before being taught by using listening to song, 2) To know the students’ ability in writing after being taught by using listening to song, 3) To find out whether there is any significant difference between the students’ ability on writing before being taught by using listening to song and after being taught by using listening to song. Research Method: 1) the research design in this study was pre-experimental design with quantitative approach, 2) the population of this study was all the students of second grade at SMPN 1 Besuki Tulungagung, 3) the sample was VIIIC class consisting of 23 students, 4) the research instrument was test (pretest and posttest), 5) the data analysis was using T-test. The research finding in this research showed the difference between the average of students’ writing scores before they were taught using song media (60.21) and after they were taught using song media (65.21). Statistical calculation using T-test showed that the score of T-count (5.302) was greater than that of T-table (1.717) with significant level 5% and the degree of freedom of 22. It was concluded that Song is an effective media in teaching English writing skill to junior high school, especially for the second year students at SMPN 1 Besuki, Tulungagung. Based on the result above, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) that states there is significant difference of students’ writing ability by using song as a media is accepted, while the null hypothesis (Ho) that states there is no significant difference of students writing ability by using song as the media is rejected
