Key Words: Literature, Short stories, Sherlock Holmes Short Stories, Character, Characterization, Character values English literature is one that gives an insight into how the development of humans and language might affect humans’ life and values. Detective fiction is one of English literature that is derived from genres called mysteries, crimes, and adventures. Therefore, due to detective fiction being one of the human achievements in knowledge and language, there may consist of some values which are called character values. Character values are values that had been invented by Licktona (1991) which initiated from three basic concepts of character education. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate character values based on The Ministry of Education Indonesia (2010) in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The formulation of the research problem in this research (1) What are character values found in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories?, (2) How are character values presented in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories?, (3) How do character values affect characters’ characterization in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories that are based on their canonical order? The purpose of this study is (1) to know character values in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories, (2) to know how character values are presented in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories, and (3) to know how character values affect characters’ characterization in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories that are based on their canonical order. Then, the design of the study used content analysis by Cohen, Manion, and Morrison (2007). The primary data is the statement of the character in the dialog or the monolog, author descriptions of the characters, and the character’s opinion on a certain character in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories. Therefore, the instrument is using a table or a matrice. The results showed that (1) character values are found in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories. There are 16 character values, except patriotic and nationalistic, that are found in it. The character values that are emphasized in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories are honest, curious, democratic, hardworking, and responsible. (2) the character values are presented based on the object in Sherlock Holmes Short Stories, so some themes or forms are found. Therefore the characterization is in the form of indirect characterization. (3) Characterization and character values are related to each other in analyzing character development which inside characterization is more than a character value.
