English Education department. Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Tulungagung. Advisor: Nanik Sri Rahayu, M.Pd. Key words: Grammatical error, Writing, Descriptive text Grammar is one of considering aspects in writing. As we know that grammar is arrangement of words in a sentence to express the writer’s ideas. That is why grammar plays an important role in producing a good writing text. However, some students may get difficulties in constructing sentences with in relation to this the writer will conduct a study on correct grammar. Error in grammatical since it can be used to give some contribution in attempting to decrease errors made by the students in writing. The formulation of the research problems in this research were: (1) What type of grammatical errors were made by the first grade students of SMPN 1 Boyolangu in writing descriptive text? (2) Which types of errors categories have the highest and the lowest frequency made by the first grade students of SMPN 1 Boyolangu in writing descriptive text? The objective of this research were: (1) To identify what type of grammatical errors were made by the first grade students of SMPN 1 Boyolangu in writing descriptive text (2) To identify which types of error categories have the highest and the lowest frequency made by the first grade students of SMPN 1 Boyolangu in writing descriptive text. This research is descriptive design with quantitative approach. The population of this research was all the first grade students of SMPN 1 Boyolangu in academic year 2015/2016. The sample of this research was VII-E class which consists of 38 students. The instrument used in this research was writing test. The data analysis was using the procedure of error analysis which adopted by the writer into identify, classification, tabulation, and possible cause of error. In term of each error, errors in using verb groups (105), errors in subject-verb agreements (113), errors in the use of articles (14), errors in the use of prepositions (28), errors in pluralization (49), errors in the use of pronouns (33), errors in the use of conjunctions (22), and errors in the use of adverbs (44). Based on the finding of the research, it is suggested that English teacher should pay attention to the grammatical errors that often made by students in composing writing. After knowing the students’ errors, the teacher have to give explanation and feedback for their students related to the errors. This research is concern only analyzing grammatical error in students’ descriptive text. So, other researchers are suggested to analyze other aspects in writing composition.
