Keywords : Speaking Skill, Group Project Speaking skills, as the most basic ability in English provides a significant part in the language learning process. Teachers can employ group project activities to help students develop speaking skills. Students actively participate in group projects by determining what and how they will learn. They work collaboratively because they have a common interest in a subject. Each member of the group contributes to the research strategy. This type assesses students' interpersonal and teamwork skills. This research aimed to measure students’ speaking skills for the eighthgrade students of MTs Darul Hikmah Tulungagung using group project activities (by applying role play) in teaching English and to find out whether group project activities are effective for students speaking skills. The purpose of this research is to know the significant difference in scores between students’ speaking skills before and after being taught group projects in the eighth grade at MTs Darul Hikmah Tulungagung. A pre-experimental research method was used and a number of 31 students participated in this research. Before doing the treatment, the researcher apply tryout in other class with the simillar grade. The instrument used for this study was speaking test which were conducted as a pretest before the application of group project activities and a post-test after it. The students’ scores, as data of this research were analyzed by using SPSS 25. This study discovered significant enhancements in students' speaking skills before and after employing group project activities. the minimum score of post-test was 12.00, the maximum score of post-test was 21.00, the mean score was 18.0645, and the standard deviation was 2.47569. The findings of this study employing group project activities showed that researchers believed group projects to be an effective way for teaching students speaking skills. It provides students with more opportunities to speak up and more space to express their thoughts to their one another.
