Keywords: Lack of Confidence, Speaking Ability Speaking ability is an ability that is always considered difficult to do. This relates to the process of speaking directly without much time to think. In addition there are many aspects that must be considered when speaking, one of it is self-confidence. Lack of confidence which causes worry, fear, and anxiety can hinder their speaking ability. Students who lack of confidence, they were more prone to feeling afraid to practice, so their speaking ability will be hampered. The formulation of the research problem in this study was “Is there any correlation between students’ lack of confidence and their speaking ability?”. Then, this study aims to search out correlation between students’ lack of confidence and their speaking ability. This study used a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The population of this study was the 1st students of English Education Department at States Islamic University of Sayyid Ali Rahmatullah Tulungagung. The sample needed for the questionnaire was 60 participants of 1st semester students of English Education Department, which then the results of the questionnaire were categorized by the level of students’ self-confidence in speaking ability and it found there were 10 students’ had high level of lack confidence. So, the sample of this study was 10 students’ of English Education Department who had high level of lack confidence. The instruments used were questionnaire and document of students' Speaking scores taken from lecturer data. The Pearson Product Moment calculation analysis showed that the correlation coefficient was −0.392 and sig. level 0.262 so that the null hypothesis (H0) is accepted which states "There is no significant correlation between students' lack of confidence and their speaking ability" and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is rejected. It can be concluded that there is negative correlation in low level between students’ lack of confidence and their speaking ability.
