English Education Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training. State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Tulungagung. Advisor: Dr. Susanto, S.S, M.Pd. Key words: Effectiveness, Snowball Throwing Technique, Speaking Achievement Snowball Throwing is a learning model to explore the students’ potential leadership in group and the students’ creativity in proposing and answering question which is combined through imaginative game in a group. Using this technique in teaching speaking, especially about narrative helps improve students’ speaking well. Practically, Snowball Throwing Technique is fun and it is able to stimulate the students to be active. The formulation of the research problems is: Is there any significant difference scores on the students’ speaking ability before and after being taught by using Snowball Throwing Technique? The purpose of the study is to know whetherthere is significant difference scores on the students’ speaking ability before and after being taught by using Snowball Throwing Technique. Research method: 1) The research design is pre-experimental design using quantitative approach, 2) The populations of this study are all students of eight grade students of SMPN 5 Tulungagung, 3) The sample is 8H class consisting 32 students and they are choose purposively, 4) The research instruments are tests pre-test and post-test of speaking, 5) The technique of data analysis is using T-test. T-test is used to compute students’ scores to determine whether Ha is accepted or rejected. The result shows that the totals of students’ score before being taught by using Snowball Throwing Technique are (62.09). Meanwhile the students’ scores after being taught by using Snowball Throwing Technique are (71.84). From the result of computation, it reveales that tcountis (15.432). It is bigger than T-table 2.037 and it is significant at level 0.05. Based on the result above, this means that Ha which states that there is significant effect of using snowball throwing technique for teaching speaking to the eight grade students of SMPN 5 Tulungagung is accepted. Whereas, Ho which states that there is no significant effect of using snowball throwing technique is rejected. In other words, Snowball Throwing Technique is effective used as an alternative technique for teaching speaking to the students of eight grade for SMP level.
