Abstract

Keywords: learning strategies, vocabulary In learning language, the students cannot be separated by using of vocabulary. Vocabulary is the basic knowledge that should be mastered by the students to know the meaning in a language. In order to be easier in mastering four English skills, the students have to master in vocabulary first. Students who have little knowledge in vocabulary will get difficulty in their learning process. In developing vocabulary, students need learning strategy to increase it. Therefore, the students have various learning strategies they employ. It demands the students to use their own learning strategy so that they are more successful in English than other students. By taking at the eighth semester students, the researcher wants to find out the learning strategy in vocabulary employed by good students in their learning English process which make them successful in English achievement. The research problems in this research are: 1) What strategies are used by the students at the eighth semester of English department of IAIN Tulungagung in learning vocabulary? 2) What strategy mostly is used by the students at the eighth semester of English department of IAIN Tulungagung in learning vocabulary? 3) What are the problems faced by students at the eighth semester of English department of IAIN Tulungagung in learning vocabulary? 4) What are the solutions used by students at the eight semester of English department of IAIN Tulungagung to solve their problem in learning vocabulary? The purposes in this research are: 1) To know the strategies are used by the students at the eighth semester of English department of IAIN Tulungagung in learning vocabulary. 2) To know the strategy mostly is used by the students at the eighth semester of English department of IAIN Tulungagung in learning vocabulary. 3) To know the problems faced by students at the eighth semester of English department of IAIN Tulungagung in learning vocabulary. 4) To know the solutions used by students at the eight semester of English department of IAIN Tulungagung to solve their problem in learning vocabulary. The research methodology applied in this research includes: 1) Descriptive research with qualitative approach as its design. 2) The English students in eight B class at IAIN Tulungagung as subjects in this research. 3) The method to collect data in this research employed by interview, questionnaire, and documentation. 4) There are three techniques in analyzing the data involve making data reduction, drawing data display, and making conclusion/verification. viii As result of this research, the researcher finds various strategies in learning vocabulary employed by students in eight B class in English department. Those learning strategies are: 1) reading book relate with English (metacognitive). 2) Watching subtitling-movie (cognitive). 3) Listening English music (cognitive). 4) Conducting conversation (social affective), and 5) Chatting with foreigner (social affective). For the learning strategy is mostly used is reading. 1) the motivation in learning, 2) the ability of memory that is impossible to remember all vocabularies which have been gotten, 3) differentiating words that have similar spelling such as require and acquire, 4) knowing the meaning of idiom, and 5) differentiating part of speech such as separate, separable, and separation are the difficulties which are faced by students in learning vocabulary. The solution to solve this problem is by practicing vocabulary every day. These ways include 1) communicating with friends use English, 2) chatting with foreigner who uses English as their first language, and 3) using dictionary to find the meaning of difficult words.
