Abstract

In this thesis, the implementation of social and emotional learning (SEL) in the English classroom is examined from the teachers' perspectives at an Indonesian modern Islamic school. With an emphasis on SEL's features and practices, the study aims to find out how teachers see SEL and its use in the context of Islamic schools. A qualitative descriptive technique was used in the research design, which also included interviews, classroom observations, and, initially, an online questionnaire purposed for subject selection. The initial data-gathering process entailed distributing an online questionnaire to 12 English teachers who worked in Islamic schools in East Java and taught students in the elementary through high school grades. Following the assessment of the questionnaire results, a further investigation was carried out using one chosen participant in direct interviews and classroom observations. The research results show that teachers in Islamic schools understand the advantages of SEL implementation and actively include SEL elements in the lessons they teach. The positive effects of including all SEL components, such as self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making, into their teachings have been convincing by the teachers. The concepts learned, and teaching strategies employed by the teachers supported these ideas. The research finds that teachers at modern Islamic schools’ value SEL implementation and are aware of its benefits for student's personal growth and wellbeing. Educators and policymakers can more effectively integrate SEL approaches into Islamic educational programs and improve students' social and emotional growth for their overall performance by comprehending teacher opinions and behaviors surrounding SEL. Teachers can play a key role in promoting students' interpersonal and intrapersonal growth, providing a good and supportive learning environment, and preparing them to become well-rounded individuals who are successful academically and beyond by emphasizing SEL in the classroom.
